Oct 19: The Department of Education has issued final guidance on maintaining, collecting, and reporting racial and ethnic data to the Department. Guidance is effective December 3, 2007.
June 29: The Supreme Court yesterday ruled 5-4 to reject as unconstitutional plans in two major school districts that assigned students to schools based on race. The case concerned school districts in Louisville, KY and Seattle, WA, but will have implications nationwide.
May 11: Officials at the US Air Force Academy have expressed concerns about a proposed Department of Defense regulatory change that would prevent the academy's prep school from prioritizing female and minority applicants for admission. Academy officials cite the need for a diverse officer corps in opposing the policy change.
March 16: The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has issued guidance for institutions of higher education regarding equal access to higher education for students with disabilities. Read the OCR's Dear Colleague on the matter, as well as the Dear Parent letter.
Dec 5: Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard arguments regarding the use of race in K-12 school assignments. NACAC signed on to the amicus brief submitted by the American Council on Education.
Oct 13: Read the amicus brief submitted by the American Coucil on Education (ACE) and 20 other education organizations, including NACAC, on the value of diversity in K-12 education.
Sept 14: Former college president Julius Chambers urged selective universities to consider high school diversity as a positive factor in the admission process. Chambers spoke at a conference this week focused on college access, and suggested this admission policy may encourage more diversity at the high school level.
